The Basics of EDI (Electronic Data Interchange)

Electronic Data Interchange or EDI refers to the computer-to-computer exchange of information using agreed upon communication standards. EDI is a preferred method for suppliers and vendors to communicate with one another about orders, inventory, invoicing, shipping, remittances and other such data in a streamlined and affordable fashion.

The data included on an EDI transmission is basically the same as the information found on a printed conventional document. But instead of using mail, fax, email, or file transfer, EDI is setup to automatically transfer data between companies without human’s directly initiating or facilitating communication. There are hundreds of transaction types that can be handled via EDI. Basically, any type of business transaction that can be done via paper, phone, etc, can also be processed via an EDI transaction.
